Trend Update: Blood Red Samala River, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, October 2016
October 14, 2016: The Samala River in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala has turned blood red. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources is on the scene and investigating.
An unknown black substance that has dumped into the river may be the cause. This substance is near an electrical power plant on the Samala River. The National Electrification Institute indicated the pollution is not related to any process of power generation.
Fish in the river are dying. Approximately 400,000 people live along the Samala River.
