Trend Update: Trump & Netanyahu Meet in DC, February 2017

Genesis 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you…

February 15, 2017: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with President Donald Trump.

President Trump has set a different tone in comparison to previous United States presidents. A two state solution is not a necessary condition for peace.

“I like the one that both parties like. I can live with either one. I thought for a while that two states looked like the easier of the two. If Israel and the Palestinians are happy, I like the one they like the best.” –President Trump.

Trump also called for a change in attitude of the Palestinians.

“(Palestinians) have to get rid of some of that hate that they are taught at a very young age. They must also acknowledge Israel’s right to exist.” –President Trump.

Trump indicated he is committed to peace in the Middle East.

“Our administration is committed to working with Israel and our common allies in the region toward greater security and stability. That includes working on a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. We’ll be working on it very, very diligently. Very important to me also.” –President Trump.

A sticking point in peace talks has been the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated he was willing to consider the issue.

“Trump is willing to upgrade our ties in every field. So if there’s a request from the president to examine this issue of construction in the settlement then I think our national interest to reach an understanding. It is worth making an effort… we agreed to continue to discuss this issue to try to reach understandings that fit our desire for reaching peace and security.” –Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Another key issue discussed was the potential move of the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“As far as the embassy moving to Jerusalem, I’d love to see that happen. And we are looking at it very, very strongly. We’re looking at it with a great care, a great care, believe me. And we’ll see what happens.” –President Trump.

“Concerning the embassy, I said I support moving it to Jerusalem. He’s examining the issue thoroughly but he heard our unequivocal opinion on the matter. He wants time to look into the issue.” –Prime Minister Netanyahu.

A tweet by Prime Minister Netanyahu captured the day.

“A warm and excellent meeting with President Donald Trump – a successful day for the State of Israel!”
