Locusts Invade Yemen, June 2019

Joel 1:4 What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; and what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; and what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten.

Granted the context of Joel 1 is the land of Israel. The prophet does offer a glimpse into the future of the Promised Land. However, this plague of locusts is a reality for modern day Yemen and Iran.

During the holy month of Ramadan, folks in Yemen enjoyed a diet of the red desert locust. Due to food shortages related to war, the people of Yemen have grave concerns when locusts invaded their food supply. Twenty-five percent (25%) of food for the country is produced domestically.

“One swarm covering one square kilometers contains 50 million locusts, and this swarm can eat the equivalent of 100 tons per day,” Wajeeh Mutawakel, Director General of the Plant Protection Office.

Good news, Yemenis love to eat locusts.

“Instead of them eating our vegetables, now we eat locusts with rice and our vegetables are fine. Locusts swept the entire Arab region, but when they arrived in Yemen, Yemenis eliminated them.” -Ameen al-Haqash, Farmer

“Locusts don’t threaten food security, especially in Yemen. Yemenis eat them before they eat their crops. Its taste is delicious. If you eat one locust, you will end up wanting to eat five. I walk every day after breakfast to find locusts for dinner. I have become addicted.” -Farooq al-Jaradi

Locusts are also moving into Saudi Arabia and southern Iran.

Leviticus 11:22 These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, and the devastating locust in its kinds, and the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds.

Locusts are a “clean” food per the Mosaic Law. The prophet Joel promises a time when there will be no food in Israel. The land will be stripped of its resources by locusts. The only thing left to eat will be locusts. Consider the implications and benefits of locusts.

Locusts: 1) high in protein; 2) protect the human body against the harmful effects of radiation; 3) suppress the growth of cancer cells; 4) prevents the development of heart attack and stroke by boosting the effect of blood-thinning drugs; 5) increases immunity levels; 6) helps control cholesterol levels; 7) combat inflammatory processes; 8) enhances regeneration of tissues.

Is there a hint of the prophetic future with benefits of a locust diet? Fights the effects of radiation? Suppresses cancer? Enhances tissue regeneration? Increases immunity?

Sounds like an antidote to nuclear exposure and disease to me.
