May 10, 2021: It has been a busy day in Jerusalem. Today marks the third day of clashes with violence between Israeli forces and Muslim worshippers. Ramadan closes on Wednesday, May 12th at sunset. Hundreds more were injured in the violence. As Muslims shot fireworks at Israeli forces, trees on the Temple Mount caught fire near the Al Aqsa Mosque near the south end of the holy site.

The Israeli National Holiday of Jerusalem Day took place. Jerusalem Day celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem. The holiday marks the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City post the June 1967 Six-Day War. State ceremonies and memorial services were held throughout the day.

Hamas in the Gaza Strip took the opportunity to launch rockets and missiles into Israel including Jerusalem. Rocket sirens blared throughout the capital. This was the first time since 2014 sirens were heard in Jerusalem.

Israel’s leadership did not take kindly to the incursions. Israeli Defense Forces Spokesman Jonathan Conricus issued a statement on the current status.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated, “Israel would respond with great force… the current conflict could continue for some time.”

Hamas claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks on Israel and Jerusalem. Hamas had given a 6 p.m. deadline for Israel to withdraw from the Al Aqsa Mosque. Hamas responded with their deadline crossed.
