Angels: Cherubim

Genesis 3:24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

The Hebrew word for cherub is kerub: probably an order of angelic beings (Strong’s Concordance).

A form of the word “kerub” is referenced 91 times in the Old Testament per Strong’s. The derivation of the term is unknown. Cherub is the singular form and Cherubim is the plural form.

The first reference of the word cherubim is noted after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. The context is that of judgment and protection. Fire is associated with the context indicating purification.

What are the physical characteristics of a cherub? They have wings and they can be a vehicle of transportation.

2 Samuel 22:11 He rode on a cherub and flew; He was seen on the wings of the wind.

~

The Prophet Ezekiel probably provides the best eye witness account and physical description of cherubim in the Bible. Like the seraphim, cherubim are associated with burning coals. The coals purify and cleanse.

Ezekiel 10:2 And He said to the man clothed in linen, “Go in among the whirling wheels underneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.”

Cherubim have the ability to stand upright.

Ezekiel 10:3a Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the house…

Apparently, the wings of the cherubim are in constant motion and the noise created is loud. Scripture tells us God’s voice is comparable to rushing water or thunder.

Ezekiel 10:5 And the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.

Like seraphim, heat and fire do not burn cherubim. They also appear to have hands like humans which are located under their wings.

Ezekiel 10:7-8 And a cherub stretched out his hand from between the cherubim to the fire that was between the cherubim, and took some of it and put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who took it and went out. The cherubim appeared to have the form of a human hand under their wings.

The facial structure and appearance of a cherub is different than a human. They are unique in their appearance. This distinction is made in the physical description of a “whirling wheel” below.

Ezekiel 10:14 And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of the cherub, and the second face was a human face, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

Angels: Seraphim

How many types of angels are there? Well, that depends. Scholars throughout history have debated this question. When people look at the Biblical text, generally the answer can vary from 7-11 different types of angels.

As you read this, please keep in mind this is not a comprehensive or conclusive list. There is much speculation and conjecture with this topic.

Angels do have structure and order. There is much debate as to which group of angels is the most powerful.

Seraphim: The term is simply defined in the Hebrew as a fiery serpent. Seraphim is the plural form with the -im ending. Context of Biblical verses would suggest they are copper or amber in color. The most comprehensive verse of description for seraphim is in Isaiah. The scene is in Heaven.

Isaiah 6:1-4 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above Him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.

Heat and fire apparently do not burn them.

Isaiah 6:6-7 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

There is the incident in the wilderness with Moses and the “the fiery serpent.”

Numbers 21:6-9 Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

The interesting part of the story is the language used by the LORD verses the language used by Moses and the people. When the LORD is talking, the term saraph or seraphim is stated.

When Moses and the people are talking, the term nachash is used. Nachash is translated as snake or serpent. Nachash is the term used of the snake in the Garden of Eden. (Definitions provided by Strong’s Concordance.)

Seraphim are utilized by God as an instrument of judgment towards the people in the desert. The LORD sent seraphim.

Seraphim are involved with types and shadows of the atoning power of Jesus Christ. Seraphim are the instrument God uses in examples. It is not the saraph that atones for sin. In Isaiah 6:7, it is the burning coal carried by the saraph that removes the sin. The fire cleanses and purifies in the example.

The LORD told Moses to make a “saraph”. Moses made a bronze “nachash” and placed it on a pole. When the people put their faith in God’s word to look at the bronze serpent for healing, they were spared their human lives at that time.

Seraphim were involved in examples of the Promise to come.

Colossians 1:20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Angels: Intelligence With Strength

Posted in #PaulthePoke, Angels with tags , , , , on July 14, 2019 by paulthepoke

The Bible teaches that angels have the ability to think and they are intelligent. By the description given in the texts, angels are clearly more intelligent than humanity in its current fallen state.

2 Samuel 14:20 In order to change the course of things your servant Joab did this. But my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God to know all things that are on the earth.”

Some angels know “all” as the verse above states. The Hebrew word “kol” is translated as all or everything or the whole as noted per Strong’s Concordance. Note, their wisdom is limited to “things that are on the earth.”

In Hebraic thought, wisdom is more than knowledge. It is the ability to practically apply what is known. Wisdom is demonstrating a skill set of information. Angels just don’t know. They can do what they know.

Angels are limited in their knowledge. They are not all knowing and possessing omniscience like God. For example, they don’t know when Jesus is coming back to Earth.

Matthew 24:36 But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

Angels possess super human strength. They are much stronger than humanity in its current fallen state. Angels are not all powerful. Their strength is limited. But when it comes to war, angels are special forces on steroids.

Herod met his death at the hand of an angel.

Acts 12:23 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

One angel can handle hundreds of thousands of armed soldiers.

2 Kings 19:35 And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

It stands to reason, the whole camp could have been destroyed. But who would have been left to inform others of the power of the angel?

Taking out an entire city would not be an issue for an angel. In the case below, the angel submits his will to God and follows His directions. Otherwise, the city would have been destroyed.

2 Samuel 24:16 But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough, withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

In some cases, angels are allowed to thoroughly finish the job.

2 Chronicles 32:21a …and the LORD sent an angel who annihilated every mighty warrior, leader, and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria…

It was an angel who moved the stone at Christ’s tomb. The gospel accounts of the stone indicate it was “rolled”. The assumption is the stone was round. Stones that sealed tombs were generally 3-4 feet in diameter. Typically, the stone was rolled down an incline to set in place and seal a tomb. To remove the stone, it would have to be rolled and pushed up an incline working against gravity. Estimates are the stone covering Christ’s tomb weighed 2,000 to 4,000 pounds. This was no problem for an angel. He did his job and took a seat on his work. Then he had a chat with some ladies. It was an angel who told and showed humanity that Jesus had risen from the dead.

Matthew 28:2-6 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, as He said. Come, see the place where He lay.

Angels: Existing in Numbers

The Bible repeatedly teaches the existence of angels. It is assumed as a matter of fact that angels exist. For the atheist and critic who demand proof, they will never be satisfied. Atheists turn to themselves and their sense of reason and logic for answers. God’s word as source will never be good enough for some.

Hebrews 1:6-7 And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.” Of the angels He says, “He makes His angels winds, and His ministers a flame of fire.”

Angels have been observed from the beginning of the earth. Angels were noted to protect the garden after the fall of man.

Genesis 3:24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.

Jesus knew angels existed. He created them. Christ explained that He had angels at His disposal if He called on the Father. The context of the comments to a Roman soldier had to be overwhelming. A Roman legion was estimated to be about 5,000 soldiers. Jesus was claiming He could have about 60,000 angels at His word with destructive and formidable Heavenly force. Jesus knew He could avoid arrest and ultimately death. The Godhead was in absolute control of the situation in the Garden of Gethsemane. Yet, He submitted Himself to arrest and ultimately death on a cross.

Matthew 26:53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and He will at once send Me more than twelve legions of angels?

The number of angels is innumerable. In the Greek, the word is μυριάς/murias. We get the English word “myriad” from the Greek term. It literally means 10,000. In the verse below, the word is plural. So there are 10,000’s upon 10,000’s. The number of angels cannot be counted.

Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels…

Elisha communicates the same idea to a follower in 2 Kings. When the veil is pulled back, the number is overwhelming.

2 Kings 6:16-17 He (Elisha) said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Angels will ultimately be dispatched by Christ to the Earth to clean house in preparation for the kingdom.

Matthew 13:41 The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness…

Angels: Created With Free Will

aggelos/ἄγγελος: In the Greek, an angel or messenger, generally a supernatural messenger from God conveying news or behests from God to men.

malak: In the Hebrew, a messenger. -Strong’s Concordance

What does the Bible have to say about Angels? God’s word does not give an account about how angels were created. The Bible does not say when angels were created. But we do know that angels were created before the universe and humanity.

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The context of this verse is a line of questioning directed to Job by God. Job is being asked if he was present prior to the creation of the world. God is explaining to Job that He laid the foundation and measured it out. Then God informs Job that the “morning stars” and the “sons of God” observed this event, sang, and shouted. “Sons of God” is an idiomatic expression for angels in the Old Testament. “Morning stars” is a term for angels. These beings saw God create the earth.

We do know that God, specifically Christ, created the angels.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Psalm 148:2, 5 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for He commanded and they were created.

In comparing angels to resurrected humanity, Jesus tells us that angels are immortal and they do not marry. Apparently, marriage is not intended in God’s program for angels.

Luke 20:35-36. But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Psalm 148:6 He has also established them (angels and host) forever and ever; He has made a decree which will not pass away.

Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

There are two groups of angels, the elect and those fallen. There are those elect angels who follow God the Father and Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 5:21 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality.

1 Kings 22:19 Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the LORD. I saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left.

Psalm 103:2 Bless the LORD, you His angels, mighty in strength, who perform His word, obeying the voice of His word!

The fallen angels are those who are evil and follow Satan. Of the fallen angels, there are two groups. Some of the fallen are incarcerated.

2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment…

Some of the fallen angels are currently loose and free. These angels are currently under the leadership of Satan.

Revelation 12:7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back.

Granted the book of Jasher is an extra Biblical source, but there is an interesting note in regards to the ratio of fallen angels who are incarcerated and those who are not. Noah made the following comment when praying to God about angels and demons. These comments indicated 90% are bound and only 10% are free to maneuver under the will of Satan.

Jasher, Book of Jubilees 10: 9, 11 And He said: Let the tenth part of them remain before him, and let nine parts descend into the place of condemnation.’ And we did according to all His words: all the malignant evil ones we bound in the place of condemnation and a tenth part of them we left that they might be subject before Satan on the earth.

~

Angels will ultimately be judged by humanity.

1 Corinthians 6:3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?

Humanity was not created to go to a fiery end. Man was originally created perfect and eternal. Hell was designed for fallen angels. These are the words of Jesus Himself.

Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels…'”
