Veils & Head Coverings…Thoughts from an American Soldier

1 Timothy 2:9-10 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness, with good works.

Look at the adjectives in the Greek in regards to clothing. Definitions provided by Strong’s Concordance.

“Proper” κόσμιος/kosmios: well arranged, seemly, modest.

“Modestly” αἰδώς/aidos: honour, modesty, bashfulness, reverence, regard for others, respect.

“Discreetly” σωφροσύνη/sophrosune: soundness of mind, self-control, sobriety, self-restraint, temperate, moderation, prudently.

1 Peter 3:3 Do not let your adorning be external, the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear, but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

From the Bible’s perspective, it is not how a woman dresses or the clothes she wears. Scripture does have expectations of dress. The issue is her attitude and inner beauty. God does not care how fancy or expensive your accessories are.

A woman’s inner beauty is more important than what she wears or how she looks. Her conduct is to be consistent with gentleness, meekness, tranquility, and quietness. This is what is excellent and valuable…

American-flag

Entering Iraq in 2003, I had it in my head. I was to defend my country; fight for freedom; and protect my family from the threats overseas. We have to find weapons of mass destruction. We need to stop Saddam’s regime.

The first time I entered the Islamic part of the world, I never really thought much about religion. Yes, I had read about Christianity defending themselves from being wiped out by Muslims during the Holy Wars. But again, I read them from the mindset of the history of a past. You know, something that happened a long, long time ago…

A lot of people in the western world have no idea what it’s like over here in the Middle East. You watch these Islamic States videos and the people living in it. The culture is medieval. It is the way they live. It is the way they treat their people. It is the way they treat their own family.

This is a question I get asked a lot of the times. Why do the females of the cult “Muslim” or the ideology of “Islam” wear head covers and veils? Ladies, I can see it in some of the people’s eyes when they ask me out of curiosity. They believe that it is something really cool or really neat. But it’s not. It’s pure slavery.

Veils and Covering

Does Islam require women to cover themselves?  Yes. There is some disagreement as to whether the face should be veiled. But almost all scholars agree that a woman’s hair should be covered. The covering of cloth is supposed to keep the sexual appetites of passing men at bay when women travel outside the home. This might even save a woman’s life. She is usually assumed to bear the responsibility of unlawful sexual encounters and thus subject to stoning.
