Gabriel: Character of the Antichrist, Part 2

Daniel 8:25b…and he will magnify himself in his heart, and he will destroy many while they are at ease. He will even oppose the Prince of princes, but he will be broken without human agency”.

The angel Gabriel completes his communication to the prophet Daniel. Gabriel finishes his description of the character of the antichrist.

…and he will magnify himself in his heart… His ego will be out of control. Pride will be on display. Confidence will not be lacking and he will be capable of great things, just ask him. He also takes after his leader Satan. God reminds Satan of his attitude and thoughts in Isaiah.

Isaiah 14:13-14 “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly in the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’”

~

…and he will destroy many while they are at ease. People will be at quietness and prosperity. Then he will strike. This is consistent with Scripture in the New Testament as written by the Apostle Paul.

1 Thessalonians 5:3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.

He will even oppose the Prince of princes… Now this is a bad career move. It is never a good idea to oppose Jesus Himself. But, this is the kind of ego he possesses. The antichrist will take his stand and present himself against Christ.

..but he will be broken without human agency”. The Hebrew says the antichrist will be shabar or broken. Shabar is defined as: to be broken, be maimed, be crippled, be wrecked, or be crushed (figuratively). The phrase without human agency is an interesting one. It literally means “with nothingness of hand” in the Hebrew. He will be get what he deserves but not at the hand of a human being, which includes Jesus. Per the passages above, the antichrist is not sentenced to death by the Prince of princes.

This seems a bit confusing on the surface, until…

Revelation 19:20. And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.

No death for you…but, an eternal living hell.

Daniel 8:26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now.”

Gabriel is confirming that Daniel’s vision is legitimately from God. The vision of the evenings and the mornings is in reference to Daniel 8:14.

Daniel 8:14 And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.”

This vision is “true” or emeth in the Hebrew. It is faithful and firm, Amen!

Cherubim: Subject to the LORD

Ezekiel 10:4 Then the glory of the LORD rose from above the cherubim and stood over the threshold of the temple. The temple was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD.

Positionally, God is above the cherubim. Well of course, the LORD is also over His creation, the nations and kingdoms, Israel, and humanity. This is not a one time observation. The concept is reinforced in Scripture. Cherubim, as well as the rest of creation, are subject to the authority of God. See some more examples below.

Isaiah 37:16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.

Psalm 80:1 Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!

Psalm 99:1 The LORD reigns, let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!

So what is the big deal, cherubim are subjected to God their creator? In general this is not a problem, except for one…

This formerly anointed cherub is not interested in serving God. He does not want to be an equal to God. His heart is filled with self-regard and has an exaggerated sense of self-importance. He wants to place himself above the LORD of hosts (God’s title as a military commander). This cherub sees himself as a conquering leader and warrior. He wants to subdue and rule over humanity. He sees himself as moral authority. He can do it better than God.

Isaiah 14:12-14 How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

A lot of misery and suffering will continue to occur because of this attitude. But, its time will come to an end…

Pride…I Know Best

Pride is the intention of the heart that is in contrast to the will of God.

As men, we like to put things together. We like to build, assemble, fix stuff, do it yourself projects, and in general tinker. The challenge lies in that can we complete the task correctly without reading the directions! Do we have the skill and problem solving ability to do it on our own? Who needs directions, we are men! This is the attitude of self-reliance, individualism. We jump in, we separate the parts. We analyze what goes where. One hour later, the project is not completed. We are frustrated, irritated, and crabby. We might say and do things we will later regret. Then we remember. If all else fails, read the directions. If we would have set aside our pride and arrogance from the beginning, we might not have needlessly suffered the personal frustration. And we may have spared someone else from our short comings. It is this same pride that prevents us from turning to God’s word and His will for us. Man often thinks that his way is better than God’s way. He is the creator of the universe. He gave us the handbook for life’s trials in the Bible. He programmed us and He knows what is best for us. The issue is, will we set aside our pride and submit to God’s will?

In Scripture, there are many words that are synonymous with pride. Some of these include arrogance, haughtiness, grandeur, loftiness, pomp, strut, and swelling. This attitude is not one that God cares for.

Proverbs 16:5, Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; assuredly, he will not be unpunished.

Satan’s pride and mental attitude cost him his appointed position by God in Ezekiel 28:17. He was proud because of his beauty. God knew Satan’s attitude in Isaiah 14:13-14, Satan’s five “I will” statements. Satan wanted to be like God. He wanted to do it his way and not God’s way. Satan believed he could accomplish great things outside of the will of God. This attitude, ultimately, does not work out well for Satan. He had it all, a position of power, perfection, wealth, and wisdom. Yet, his pride caused him to fall.

It is our nature to turn away from God and try to do it ourselves. In general, we do not want any help.

Isaiah 53:6, All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way. Without God’s direction, we are without hope. Doing things our way, is not effective.

Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
