Antichrist, Peace Treaty, Part 1

Daniel 9:26-27 “Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”

Compare two people mentioned in the original Hebrew, “Messiah” and “prince”. In the Hebrew, the term for “Messiah” is mashiyach. Per Strong’s Concordance it means: anointed, anointed one, of the Messiah, Messianic prince, of the king of Israel, of the high priest of Israel. This describes Jesus, He is a king and a priest of the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7).

In the Hebrew, the term for “prince” is nagiyd. It means: leader, ruler, captain, or prince.

There is clearly a difference in prominence and prestige.

Messiah will be cut off… At the time of the writing of Daniel (approximately 606 BC to 539 BC), the idea of the Messiah being on the scene was prophetic. Messiah had yet to appear to Israel. Messiah Jesus Christ was 500-600 years away. This had to be confusing to readers, a Messiah who was going to be killed and have nothing to show.

This verse says the Messiah will be “cut off” or karath in the Hebrew. According to Strong’s Concordance karath means: to cut, cut off, cut down, cut off a body part, cut out, eliminate, or kill. Cut a covenant. This is exactly what Jesus did with His death on the cross. He was eliminated and killed at that time. With His death, He cut a blood covenant for the sins of the world.

the prince who is to come… Who are the people of this prince? In 70 AD, the Romans laid siege to Jerusalem and completely leveled the city. Many think the antichrist will come from a revived Roman Empire. In the western world, many assume this person will come from Europe. Look at a map of the Roman Empire. It is a large area of land. There is more to the Roman Empire than Italy. There is an eastern leg to the Roman Empire. The capital of the Roman Empire was moved to Constantinople, a city patterned after Rome. This eastern area included modern day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq.

This geographic area also provides for the antichrist being Jewish. Early church writers including Irenaeus and Hippolytus looked to a Jewish antichrist and backed their positions with Scripture (The Truth Behind Left Behind, Hitchcock and Ice).

There is another coming in the future of today’s time (November 2014) who will take Jerusalem again. Who is this guy going to be? Where will he come from?

will destroy the city and the sanctuary… The Hebrew grammar is clear. The false prince will be the agent of destruction and ruin Jerusalem. This verse also implies there will be a future Temple in Jerusalem. It is called the qodesh in the Hebrew. Translated, the “holy”. In the New Testament, Jesus confirms the “holy place” in Matthew 24:15 and Mark 13:14.

And its end will come with a flood… SUDDENLY! The Apostle Paul makes reference to the suddenness of the destruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.

Isaiah 9:3-5 The Prince the Liberator

Isaiah 9:3 You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; they will be glad in Your presence as with the gladness of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

The grammar in the Hebrew indicates that God is the One who causes the population of Israel to increase abundantly. God is the One who causes their joy to increase.

The nation will be happy in His presence. Harvest time for people of Israel is a time of shouting, joy, gladness, and singing. There are festivals and eating and drinking. This is a happy time full of merriment as evidenced from passages in Judges, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. This the joy the nation will experience with the living God.

There is the implication of a great military victory. The Hebrew word for “spoil” is shalal. According to Strong’s Concordance, it means: prey, plunder, spoil, booty of war. Gladness abounds as the men gather and divide the plunder.

Isaiah 9:4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.

Israel is being compared to an ox that has a yoke and carrying heavy equipment. A yoke is a wooden bar or frame that is placed on the neck of animal for the purpose work and plowing a field. An ox is an animal of labor. It was whipped and beaten.

God will step in and break this oppression as He did in the battle of Midian. The reference is to Gideon’s victory in Judges 7-8. God chose the men for battle. God needed only 300 men when the enemy had tens of thousands of soldiers. Israel was directed by God to attack at night. Confusion was created and the enemy attacked itself. The victory was decisive. It did not take long to achieve the conquest.

Isaiah 9:5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, and cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

As confusion was the case in the battle of Midian, so shall confusion and trembling reign during the battle when God intervenes again. The enemy will be burned from the head of the cloak to the toe of the boot. They will be consumed by fire.

These are future events. We know this person of the Godhead to be the man, Jesus. This says in Isaiah that He is physically coming to Earth.

Isaiah 9:1-2 A Prince is Coming

Isaiah 9:1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

The “her” is Israel. This area was invaded and plundered by Assyria and Tiglath-pileser. This is the land in anguish and contempt.

“He” is God. Later in the verse, “He” is Jesus, who is God.

The eastern border of Naphtali is the Jordan River north of the Sea of Galilee and the Sea of Galilee itself. The northern border is the Leontes River.  The western border of Naphtali is Asher and in the southwest corner is bordered by Zebulun.  Zebulun is due west of the Sea of Galilee.

This area was Jesus’ Ministry headquarters. Matthew confirmed this was fulfilled prophecy when he quoted Isaiah 9:1.

Matthew 4:13-15 … and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES—

In today’s world (June 2013), this northern region appointed to Naphtali is occupied to some degree by Lebanon.  There are prophetic considerations to this verse. These lands will be restored to Israel in the future.

Isaiah 9:2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.

Matthew 4:16 quotes this verse from Isaiah.

This is the region where Jesus recruited His disciples. From this point forward, Jesus taught the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Good news is coming.
