Purim 5781/2021: Who Is Mordecai?

Esther 9:20-22 Then Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, obliging them to celebrate the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same month, annually, because on those days the Jews rid themselves of their enemies, and it was a month which was turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and rejoicing and sending portions of food to one another and gifts to the poor.

This is the decree for the celebration of the holiday Purim. The celebration is to take place in the Hebrew month of Adar on the 14th and 15th day. In the Gregorian year of 2021, that starts on sundown Thursday, February 25th and ends the next day on Friday, February 26th. Scripture tells us the holiday is to be celebrated annually.

Then Mordecai recorded these events…

Mordecai, his name means “little man”. We know Mordecai is from the tribe of Benjamin. And he is related to King Saul by his lineage in Kish. King Saul’s father was Kish.

Esther 2:5 Now there was a Jew in Susa the citadel whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjaminite…

Mordecai adopted Esther as his daughter. He was a man of God as he took care of orphans. Mordecai’s role in the book of Esther is consistent with the Psalmist. He was just in the defense and protection of his national people.

Esther 2:7 He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman had a beautiful figure and was lovely to look at, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.

Psalms 82:3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.

Mordecai heard of a plot to assassinate King Xerxes. He shared the evil plan against the king to his adopted daughter Queen Esther. She shared the details with her husband the king. These men were put to death when the plan was confirmed (Esther 2:21-23).

Mordecai refused to bow down to one of the king’s officials, Haman. As a result, Haman set out to destroy Mordecai and all of the Jewish people in the kingdom (Esther 3). Out of concern for his fellow countrymen, Mordecai informed Queen Esther of Haman’s written plan to eliminate the Jewish people (Esther 4). Later, Mordecai was honored by the king and Haman for saving the king’s life in the plot against him (Esther 6). He was appointed and succeeded as the chief minister to King Xerxes after Haman’s death at his own gallows (Esther 8).

Mordecai was respected and honored throughout the kingdom. He grew in great power and prestige. Which takes us back to the beginning of the post and the verses in Esther 9. Mordecai was the initiator of the celebration of Purim.

God is never mentioned in the book of Esther. Yet, His sovereignty and plan are executed according to His will.

Purim is a reminder. The Spring Feasts and Passover are only a month away.

Daniel, Meet Gabriel

Daniel 8:16 And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, and it called, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.”

This is Gabriel’s formal introduction in the Old Testament. Gabriel is God’s chosen messenger to the prophet Daniel, who will document interpretation of visions.

Daniel reveals the time and place of the vision. The timing of the vision is revealed initially in Daniel 8.

Daniel 8:1 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first.

Scholars and researchers estimate the date of the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar to be about 553 BC.

Granted, Daniel is physically in Babylon at the time of the vision. But, Daniel sees himself in a specific place.

Daniel 8:2 And I saw in the vision; and when I saw, I was in Susa the citadel, which is in the province of Elam. And I saw in the vision, and I was at the Ulai canal.

Per the ATS Bible Dictionary, the Ulai or Euleus River flows by the city of Susa. It was known as the Choaspes by the Greeks. Today, it is called the Kerkhah River. The river is about a mile and a half east of Susa.

Susa was the headquarters of the ancient Persia and Media Empire. Ancient Susa is also known as Shush or Shushan.

Little did Daniel know, Susa would be the setting for the story of the book of Esther. The events in Esther took place from 483-473 BC. Queen Esther and Mordechai are buried in Hamadan, north of Susa to this very day in the 21st century Iran.

From Daniel’s vision in 553 BC to the onset of Esther’s trials in 483 BC is 70 years.

Daniel 8:15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. And behold, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man.

Gabriel is introduced by the voice of a man. It seems Gabriel has the appearance of a man.

This is not just any man. The Hebrew word for “man” is geber. This is the term for a mighty warrior. It would seem that Gabriel is physically imposing.

Daniel has the same response to Gabriel as all the other people who meet him. There are two other people who would later meet Gabriel. They are Zechariah the priest and the Virgin Mary in the book of Luke. In all three cases, Gabriel scares the hell out of them.

Daniel 8:17a So he came near where I stood. And when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face…

Daniel was “frightened” or baath in the Hebrew. The word can also be translated as startled or terrified or overwhelmed (Strong’s Concordance). Other dictionaries use the word troubled.

Daniel also “fell on my face”. This is a sign of submission or reverence by Daniel. He realized he is in over his head.

Trend Update: Saudi Arabia & Israel Strengthen Ties, April 2018

Ezekiel 38:13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish with all its villages will say to you, ‘Have you come to capture spoil? Have you assembled your company to seize plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to capture great spoil?

Who are Sheba and Dedan? They are first mentioned in Genesis 10:7 The sons of Cush were Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.

The family tree starts with Noah, then his son Ham, then his son Cush, then his son Raamah and his sons Sheba and Dedan.

Historically, per Strong’s Concordance and NET Bible, Raamah settled in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula. Sheba settled in the southern Arabian Peninsula. Dedan settled in the northern Arabian Peninsula. These areas make up what is modern day Saudi Arabia.

Dedan was an ancient capital of Saudi Arabia. It is modern day Al Ula in northwest Saudi Arabia.

April 2, 2018: The Saudi crown prince and king to be, Mohammed bin Salman, has declared Israel has a right to exist.

“I believe that each people, anywhere, has a right to live in their peaceful nation. I believe the Palestinians and the Israelis have the right to have their own land. But we have to have a peace agreement to assure the stability for everyone and to have normal relations,” Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Bin Salman also made the following incredible statements.

“Our country doesn’t have a problem with Jews. Our Prophet Muhammad married a Jewish woman. Not just a friend — he married her. Our prophet, his neighbors were Jewish. You will find a lot of Jews in Saudi Arabia coming from America, coming from Europe. There are no problems between Christian and Muslims and Jews. We have problems like you would find anywhere in the world, among some people. But the normal sort of problems.” 

Many believe the cooperation with Israel is about the management of Iran. Israel and Saudi Arabia see Iran as a mortal threat. Iran is supplying rebels in Yemen with missiles which are being launched into Saudi Arabia. The Crown Prince did not have kind comments for Iranian leadership. He specifically addressed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

According to bin Salman, the Ayatollah “makes Hitler look good.”

“Hitler didn’t do what the supreme leader is trying to do. Hitler tried to conquer Europe. This is bad. But the supreme leader is trying to conquer the world. He believes he owns the world. They are both evil guys. He is the Hitler of the Middle East. In the 1920s and 1930s, no one saw Hitler as a danger. Only a few people. Until it happened. We don’t want to see what happened in Europe happen in the Middle East. We want to stop this through political moves, economic moves, intelligence moves. We want to avoid war.” -Mohammed bin Salman

Ezekiel 38:13 says Sheba and Dedan (modern day Saudi Arabia) along with Tarshish (loosely Europe) will object and protest against Russia and its surrogates.

Trend Update: Putin, Erdogan, & Rouhani Meet in Turkey, April 2018

Ezekiel 38:1-3 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.

Ezekiel 38:6 Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-Togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.

Magog was a son of Japheth. Genesis 10:2 The sons of Japheth were Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras. Japheth was the son of Noah. The sons of Japheth were born after the flood (Genesis 10:1).

The Bible and historians are consistent. Magog is modern day Russia. The brothers of Magog (Meshech, Gomer, and Tubal) appear to point to modern day Turkey.

Russia will be joined by several countries with their future invasion of Israel (Ezekiel 38-39). One of those countries is Persia. This is modern day Iran. The country was known as Persia until the name change in the 20th century.

April 2, 2018: Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan is making headlines again. He has publicly called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a terrorist.

Erdogan: “Hey Netanyahu! You are an occupier… At the same time, you are a terrorist.”

These comments took place prior to a meeting between President Erdogan and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

 

April 3, 2018: President Vladimir Putin arrived in Turkey to meet with Erdogan. The two met to celebrate the ground breaking of the construction of a Russian nuclear plant in Turkey. The nuclear plant is being built in Akkuyu on the Mediterranean coast.

In addition to nuclear cooperation, Russia and Turkey are laying the Turkstream gas line. This is for the transport of Russian natural gas to Turkey.

Turkey has also purchased Russia’s S400 missile defense system in late 2017.

April 4, 2018: Putin and Erdogan are scheduled to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Ankara, Turkey. The talks are to focus on the situation in Syria. The future of Syria President al Assad is the topic.

As these talks are taking place in the Turkish capital, the Syrian army is advancing south towards the Golan Heights and the Israeli border. The Syrian Arab Army is deploying troops near al-Quneitra and Dara’a.

The Syrian government is following suit as they did in Ghouta east of Damascus.

These ancient brothers have fought against each other for hundreds and thousands of years as mortal enemies. Each of them have looked to control the region. Now in the 21st century they are together and united…just as Ezekiel 38 said roughly 2,500 years ago.

Purim: Haman Gonna Hate

The setting of the story is in the book of Esther. The author of the book is unknown. Celebration of Purim is not part of the Mosaic Law. The events of the story took place from 483-473 BC. God’s name is never mentioned in the book. The location is Susa of the Persian Empire. This is modern day Iran.

Haman is a source of evil. His name means tumult or noise. Haman was the prime minister for King Ahasuerus. He answered to only the king.

Esther 3:1 After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him.

Haman lays out his plan to destroy the Jewish people in Esther 3. Haman’s plan was the result of Mordecai refusing to bow to him. Haman was on a power trip and frequently angry.

Esther 3:5-6 And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was filled with fury. But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.

Haman was deceitful and manipulative to the king regarding the need to rid the kingdom of the Jews.

Esther 3:8-9 Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. Their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king’s laws, so that it is not to the king’s profit to tolerate them. If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed, and I will pay 10,000 talents of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the king’s business, that they may put it into the king’s treasuries.”

In the end, Haman’s plans were his undoing. What he prepared for Mordecai was ultimately for himself.

Esther 7:9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, “Moreover, the gallows that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, is standing at Haman’s house, fifty cubits (approximately 75 feet) high.” And the king said, “Hang him on that.”

Trend Update: Putin Hosts Turkey & Iran for Peace in Syria, November 2017

November 22, 2017, Sochi, Russia: President Vladimir Putin welcomed Turkey’s Recep Erdogan and Iran’s Hassan Rouhani for a summit. The goal was peace in the Syrian civil war. All three leaders are in favor of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad maintaining power.

“The militants in Syria (ISIS) have sustained a decisive blow and now there is a realistic chance to end the multi-year civil war,” per Vladimir Putin.

A follow up meeting is scheduled for December in Russia. The goal is to pave the way for a Syrian constitution which would include presidential term limits. Assad’s previous time as president would not be included in future term limit discussions.

It appears Russia, Iran, and Turkey will be the primary actors in rebuilding Syria.

The United Nations is complaining that Putin is interrupting the “peace process” in Syria. The United States and the European Union were not part of the discussions. Vladimir Putin is establishing himself as the dominant power broker on the world stage.

Later the same day, the following statement was made by Vladimir Putin. The Russian president placed all Russian companies (public and private) on alert. Prepare for a “rapid transition to war time operations”.

Ezekiel’s gang is together as promised. If the prophesied time and events are approaching, more troops from the three countries will pour into Syria near the Golan Heights. Are we watching Gog of Magog take the lead?

Ezekiel 38-39 says Russia allied with Turkey, Iran and others are going to invade Israel from the north. Look who is getting together to form an alliance for peace on Israel’s northern border in Syria.

August 8-9, 2017: Turkey, Iran, and Russia are having peace talks about “safe zones” in Syria. The location of the discussion is Tehran, Iran. This is according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to Lavrov, there are three operating safe zones in Syria. They include: southern Syria, Eastern Ghouta, and north of Homs. The focus of the peace talks is the Idlib province.

The safe zones were allegedly brokered on May 4, 2017. Turkey, Iran and Russia signed the deal to establish safe zones in Syria. More discussion is scheduled for later in August 2017.

August 9, 2017: A peace deal has been reached in Cairo, Egypt regarding a safe zone. The meeting was between the Russian Defense Ministry and Syrian opposition. The safe zone is the area between Hama (ancient Hamath of Jeremiah 49) and Homs. Again…Russia, Turkey, and Iran are the enforcers of the ceasefire.

August 8, 2017: Israel has held secret talks with the Russians and the United States. Meetings reportedly took place in Europe and Jordan. The Israeli concern is the increased presence of Iranian troops near the border in the Golan Heights. Increased Iranian presence is an Israeli concern all across Syria.

Here is the official statement from Israel.

“Senior Israeli officials said that the main dispute was that the Americans and the Russians see the cease-fire in southern Syria and the safe zones as a practical and tactical means of stabilizing the situation and enable a focus on wiping out the Islamic State and lowering the flames of the civil war. Israel, however, believes that the agreement should be considered from a long-term, strategic perspective and should focus on what the extent of Iranian influence will be in Syria after the civil war ends.

Trend Update: Incirlik Nukes On the Move? Iranian Troops Move West, August 2016

Conflicting reports are coming out of Turkey regarding US nuclear weapons at Incirlik Air Base. The air base has stored 50-90 nuclear weapons. Some outlets are reporting the nuclear weapons are safe and secure at the Turkey air base. Other news sources are reporting the nukes have been moved to Romania. There has been no official word out the United States military or the Pentagon. Romania is denying the movement of the nuclear weapons to their country. News sources include: Breitbart News, Haaretz, RT, Radio Free Europe, Debka just to mention a few. The US main stream press is silent.

Per the United States military, approximately 100,000 Iranian troops are now involved in Iraq. These are Shiite troops. It is believed these forces are targeting Mosul (Sunni Muslims). The Iranian troops are likely to have Russian air support from Hamadan Air Base in western Iran. Iranian troops and hardware are now moving out of Iran towards the west in the region.

August 15, 2016: Russia acquired its first permanent air base in Syria. The Khmeimim Air Base is located near Latakia, Syria on the Mediterranean Sea. With this move, some believe the balance of power in the Mediterranean has shifted to Russia.

August 16, 2016: For the first time, Russia is launching air strikes from Iran. The Iranians have agreed to give Russia access to the Hamadan Air Base in western Iran. Russia is the first foreign country allowed access to the air base. This is being reported by news outlets around the world (The Guardian, RT, Reuters, Jerusalem Post, France 24, New York Times).

RT is reporting Cyprus has offered Russia use of its air base.

Moscow, August 16, 2016: A member of Russia’s upper house of parliament and a member of Russia’s Federation Council Defense and Security Committee indicated Turkey could allow Russia access to the Incirlik Air Base. This is the same air base that is home to United States and NATO air forces. The Incirlik Air Base is alleged to house at least 50 American nuclear weapons.

August 15, 2016: A report from the non-partisan Stimson Center to the US Congress was issued. Congress was briefed about the safety of the nuclear weapons at the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. It was stated the weapons were at risk to being stolen by terrorists, the Turkey government, and/or hostile forces.
