Isaiah 9:13-16 Character in Leadership, Part 1

Isaiah 9:13-16 Yet the people do not turn back to Him who struck them, nor do they seek the LORD of hosts. So the LORD cuts off head and tail from Israel, both palm branch and bulrush in a single day. The head is the elder and honorable man, and the prophet who teaches falsehood is the tail. For those who guide this people are leading them astray; and those who are guided by them are brought to confusion.

God explains who and what the head and tail are. In the subsequent verses He explains that the head is the elder and the honorable man. The tail is a false prophet. Many times the Bible will define the terms, idiomatic and/or the metaphorical language and examples it is using. One may have to search other books of the Bible to identify the meaning, but they are there. Take the four horsemen of the Apocalypse and their colored horses in Revelation 6. There are references to these four colored horse images in the Book of Zechariah 1:8, 6:2-3. Further explanation and detail are noted in Zechariah. More information can be gleaned with a little effort.

Palm trees were associated with leadership and judgment in the Old Testament.  Leviticus 23:40 states the palm tree is a beautiful and majestic tree. Deborah lead Israel from under a palm tree in Judges 4:5 She used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel came up to her for judgment. Palm trees are frequently positioned with angels in the temple in 1 Kings 6 and Ezekiel Chapters 40, 41.

A bulrush is a reed type plant that was used to make baskets. It is the material used in the basket for the baby Moses in Exodus 2:3. It is also the plant used to make paper.

Poor leadership and discernment, a lack of morality, and light buoyancy are removed quickly. Israel sinks immediately. The Lord Himself eliminates these from the nation. Israel does not change their attitude or their actions. They do not return to God and continue in their arrogance.

Biblical Principle: Deceitful leadership will result in the destruction of the people they represent.

Notice those in charge are deliberately misleading.  The deception is intentional and purposeful. The misguided leadership causes the people to wander physically, mentally, and morally. It is as if the people are wandering around drunk and intoxicated.  The Hebrew Grammar indicates the people will be “swallowed up” because of their poor leadership. It can also mean the people will be confused. Confused and swallowed up are the results of an organization or country when poor leadership deliberately misleads. In this case, it was Israel.

Who is ultimately in charge of an organization or a government?  Take our government of the United States for instance. The President, Congress, and Supreme Court represent three equal branches of government with checks and balances. What kind of leadership is being exhibited in Washington D.C. in August 2013? Is there any deception in D.C.? Is the government looking after the citizen’s best interest and protecting our personal freedoms? Look at the culture from a mental and moral standpoint. How is the culture trending in early 21st Century America? Are we better as a culture and nation? Unlike most places on the planet, we freely elect our leaders. We really get what we ask for in the United States. Are we contributing to our own demise with the leaders we elect?

Isaiah 9:11-12 God Uses Enemy Nations for His Purpose

Isaiah 9:11-12  Therefore the LORD raises against them adversaries from Rezin and spurs their enemies on, the Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west; and they devour Israel with gaping jaws. In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away and His hand is still stretched out.

The Bible tells us Rezin is synonymous Damascus, Syria from Isaiah 7:8a “For the head of Aram is Damascus and the head of Damascus is Rezin…”  They are also known as the Arameans. The Philistines are the equivalent to the area where the modern day Gaza Strip is located on the Mediterranean Sea southwest of Jerusalem.

God is going to use these two groups of people to judge Israel. As enemies of Israel, Syria and the Philistines are willing accomplices and instruments of God. Their destruction of Israel is with complete totality.

With this initial judgment God is not finished, He is just getting started. God has His hand ready to strike Israel again. The phrase “In spite of all this His anger does not turn away, and His hand is still stretched out” is noted three additional times in Isaiah 9:17, 9:21, and 10:4.

Judgment comes to a close in Isaiah 10:12. In total, Israel will go through a series of four judgments before God has finished His work.

Isaiah 9:8-10 The Cost of Pride

Isaiah 9:8-10 The Lord sends a message against Jacob, and it falls on Israel. And all the people know it, That is, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, asserting in pride and in arrogance of heart: “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with smooth stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”

God is very specific to who He is communicating, Israel. Judgment is coming.

Ephraim and Samaria are located due north of Jerusalem and west of the Jordan River.

The mental attitude is, “We will build it bigger and stronger”. This is a temporary setback. Majesty, greatness, and magnificence are their intentions.  One could say we see this same attitude in our world today. Look at the response of humanity to natural disasters. Engineering is geared to withstand massive quakes and hurricanes with the belief buildings and bridges can survive acts of God.

They upgrade their materials from bricks to smooth stones. Bricks were the most primitive material used in the construction of homes. Prominent cities utilized stone for their fortified walls, temples, grain silos, and buildings. Stone construction was a symbol of strength and technological development. Personal houses and dwellings that were built with stone indicated wealth (The New Manners and Customs of Bible Times).

The wood used is higher in quality from sycamore to cedar. Sycamore trees were abundant. Sycamore lumber was long lasting and light. Cedar wood was choice for architectural uses. The wood of the cedar is disease resistant and slow to decay. Cedar was a valuable and stout wood. The temple was primarily constructed with cedar (New Unger’s Bible Dictionary).

Israel uses the best materials available. This is not going to matter. It did not work for Edom either…Malachi 1:4a Though Edom says, “We have been beaten down, but we will return and build up the ruins”; thus says the LORD of hosts, “They may build, but I will tear down…

Isaiah 9:7 Kingdom of Peace

Posted in Isaiah, Prophecy with tags , , , , , , , , on July 15, 2013 by paulthepoke

Isaiah 9:7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

Peace in the kingdom will be limitless. Never ending peace is a constant concept in the Old Testament prophecies of the kingdom. The peace granted is complete. There will be absence of war. And peace will exist with nature and the environment.  Ezekiel 34:25 “I will make a covenant of peace with them and eliminate harmful beasts from the land so that they may live securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods.”  See also Hosea 2:18 “In that day I will also make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds of the sky and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land, and will make them lie down in safety.”

The Isaiah verse states this leader will come from the throne of David. This message was communicated and confirmed to the Virgin Mary from the angel Gabriel in Luke 1:31-33. “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

Once the Kingdom is established, it will be eternal. This same concept is noted in Daniel 2:44. “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever.

The military commander will do this by His zeal. The Hebrew word for “zeal” is qin ‘ah. Per Strong’s Concordance, this means: ardour, jealousy, jealous disposition of God for His people. God is committed to establishing peace on Earth.

Isaiah 9:6 A Child is Born, Part 2

Isaiah 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

…and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor…He will be marvelous. Isaiah 28:29 confirms this as well. This also comes from the LORD of hosts, Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great.

Mighty God… The Hebrew language indicates He is a man, strong and brave. There are military implications in the reference.

Eternal Father…The Hebrew word for eternal is ‘ad. It is defined by Strong’s Concordance as: perpetuity, forever, continuing future, ancient (of past time), forever (of future time), of continuous existence, forever (of God’s existence). God is eternal. Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

…Prince of Peace This title pictures the king as one who establishes a safe socio-economic environment for his people. It hardly depicts Him as a meek individual, for He establishes peace through military strength. His people experience safety and prosperity because their invincible king destroys their enemies (NET Bible). True peace is hard to imagine in today’s world. Think of the qualities of a true peace: completeness (in number), safety, soundness (in body), welfare, health, prosperity, quietness, tranquility, contentment, absence of war, friendship of human relationships, and a covenant relationship with God.

Shalom…

Isaiah 9:6 A Child is Born

Isaiah 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

This verse is a chorus in Handel’s Messiah which was written in 1741. The Messiah was written by Handel 24 days.

The verse is prophetic in nature. The first part of the verse, For a child will be born to us, was future to Isaiah. It is the past to us in June of 2013. We know this child to be Jesus as noted in Luke 2:11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

…a son will be given to us…The purpose of the Son is clarified in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. This fact in history has binding results today and into the future. The grammar of the verse (Isaiah 9:6) in Hebrew indicates that the son is given to us, a gift.

…and the government will rest on His shoulders…This event is yet future to us in June 2013 and of course it was future to Isaiah some 700-800 years before the birth of the son. The Hebrew word for government is misrah, according to Strong’s Concordance it could also mean rule or dominion. Translation, He is in charge. Jesus confirms this in His resurrected body in Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth…”

Other references in the Old Testament confirm authority being given to the Son by the Father. Psalm 2 is an excellent example. Specifically verses 6-7 “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain”. I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. “

1 Corinthians 15:25 For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. This is an absolute necessity when one reads this verse in the original Greek New Testament. The word for must is dei. Stated another way, it is necessary. This has to happen.

1 Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death. The Bible says there will come a time when there is no more death.

Isaiah 9:3-5 The Prince the Liberator

Isaiah 9:3 You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; they will be glad in Your presence as with the gladness of harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

The grammar in the Hebrew indicates that God is the One who causes the population of Israel to increase abundantly. God is the One who causes their joy to increase.

The nation will be happy in His presence. Harvest time for people of Israel is a time of shouting, joy, gladness, and singing. There are festivals and eating and drinking. This is a happy time full of merriment as evidenced from passages in Judges, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. This the joy the nation will experience with the living God.

There is the implication of a great military victory. The Hebrew word for “spoil” is shalal. According to Strong’s Concordance, it means: prey, plunder, spoil, booty of war. Gladness abounds as the men gather and divide the plunder.

Isaiah 9:4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.

Israel is being compared to an ox that has a yoke and carrying heavy equipment. A yoke is a wooden bar or frame that is placed on the neck of animal for the purpose work and plowing a field. An ox is an animal of labor. It was whipped and beaten.

God will step in and break this oppression as He did in the battle of Midian. The reference is to Gideon’s victory in Judges 7-8. God chose the men for battle. God needed only 300 men when the enemy had tens of thousands of soldiers. Israel was directed by God to attack at night. Confusion was created and the enemy attacked itself. The victory was decisive. It did not take long to achieve the conquest.

Isaiah 9:5 For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult, and cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

As confusion was the case in the battle of Midian, so shall confusion and trembling reign during the battle when God intervenes again. The enemy will be burned from the head of the cloak to the toe of the boot. They will be consumed by fire.

These are future events. We know this person of the Godhead to be the man, Jesus. This says in Isaiah that He is physically coming to Earth.

Isaiah 9:1-2 A Prince is Coming

Isaiah 9:1 But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

The “her” is Israel. This area was invaded and plundered by Assyria and Tiglath-pileser. This is the land in anguish and contempt.

“He” is God. Later in the verse, “He” is Jesus, who is God.

The eastern border of Naphtali is the Jordan River north of the Sea of Galilee and the Sea of Galilee itself. The northern border is the Leontes River.  The western border of Naphtali is Asher and in the southwest corner is bordered by Zebulun.  Zebulun is due west of the Sea of Galilee.

This area was Jesus’ Ministry headquarters. Matthew confirmed this was fulfilled prophecy when he quoted Isaiah 9:1.

Matthew 4:13-15 … and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES—

In today’s world (June 2013), this northern region appointed to Naphtali is occupied to some degree by Lebanon.  There are prophetic considerations to this verse. These lands will be restored to Israel in the future.

Isaiah 9:2 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.

Matthew 4:16 quotes this verse from Isaiah.

This is the region where Jesus recruited His disciples. From this point forward, Jesus taught the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Good news is coming.
