Zechariah the Priest & Prayer

Luke 1:5a In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah…

Luke 1:8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty…

This is the introduction of Zechariah the priest, father of John the Baptist.

But first, let’s look at the name Zechariah. His name means “Yah has remembered”. It would appear, Zechariah is the first person to talk to the angel (Gabriel) in the New Testament. We know that he has prayed for a child.

Luke 1:13a But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard…

A man whose name means “Yah remembers” has prayed to Yahweh. Yah has heard, remembered, and grants “Yah remembers” his wish. Then “Yah remembers” does not believe Yah remembered him and discounts the promise of a child.

Luke 1:18 “How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”

Luke 1:11 Just then, an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of the incense.

The angel was located at the right side. Symbolically, the right of God is known as a position of presence, power, and authority. Christ has ascended into Heaven and is located at the right hand of the Father.

The directions for the construction and purpose of the altar of incense are located in Exodus 30. The priests are instructed to burn incense continually. This is a request for all generations. The burning of incense is perpetual.

Exodus 30:7-8 And Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it. Every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it, and when Aaron sets up the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, a regular incense offering before the LORD throughout your generations.

The incense is fragrant and pleasing to smell. God only wants incense from this altar.

Exodus 30:9 You shall not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering, and you shall not pour a drink offering on it.

In Revelation, in the throne room of Heaven, the incense is equated with prayers.

Revelation 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne…

Despite being a priest and serving God in the Temple, Zechariah did not believe God’s message. He was still granted his prayer request. But with his unbelief, there was a consequence. Silence!

Luke 1:20 And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time. -Gabriel

Do not underestimate the power of our prayers. Gabriel was located at a position of authority near the symbol for prayers.

Prayer should be part of our lives. God wants us to communicate with Him. He desires to hear from us. Our prayers are a sweet aroma to Him. He does listen and He always remembers.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-19 pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.

Predestined With Free Will: Egyptian Civil War

There are many examples in Scripture where God addresses individual nations. The prophet warn Russia, Turkey, Iran and others in Ezekiel 38-39. Damascus, Syria has a destructive date with destiny in Isaiah 17, Amos 1, and Jeremiah 49. Ancient Nineveh or modern-day Mosul, Iraq is warned in Nahum. Amos 1 warns modern day Lebanon. The Gaza Strip is informed of judgment in Ezekiel 25. Prophecy against Iran is noted in Jeremiah 49. And the list goes on and on and on…

The focus here is the destiny of the nation Egypt. A significant prophecy regarding the future of Egypt is located in Isaiah 19. Like every other nation, Egypt is predestined in their journey through history. God knows the collective choices they will make. God knows literally and figuratively where their road leads. The prophet Isaiah lays out the course of Egypt prior to the coming of the Messiah.

Isaiah 19:1 The oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the LORD is riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt; the idols of Egypt will tremble at His presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.

The first observation is that the LORD directly intervenes. God is the one pressing these events. The Hebrew word for “oracle” is massa’. Simply stated, it means a burden or load. This same word, massa’, was also the name of Ishmael’s son (Genesis 25:14). Ishmael’s name means burden. Ishmael’s mother Hagar is Egyptian (Genesis 16:1). Prophetically speaking, Hagar’s offspring were destined to carry a burden.

The LORD is coming quickly on a swift cloud. The Hebrew word for “cloud” is `ab. What is not stated in the translation is the type of cloud. It is a dark, thick cloud. The introduction states this is going to be swift, quick, and ominous. It reminds me of a supercell thunderstorm you can see rolling in on the plains.

Isaiah 19:2 “So I will incite Egyptians against Egyptians; and they will each fight against his brother and each against his neighbor, city against city and kingdom against kingdom…”

This is how God is going to bring the nation of Egypt together and return them to the LORD or Yahweh. God is going to bring about circumstances that will knit them as a unified country and be His people.

The first thing to happen is an Egyptian civil war. God says He will “incite” or cakak in the Hebrew. This word is also translated as “cover” per Strong’s Concordance. This is the same term used repeatedly in reference to the angels’ wings of the Ark of the Covenant. Their wings “covered” or cakak the Ark.

Exodus 25:20 The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat.

Figuratively, cakak can be seen as protection, hedge in, or join together.

Will the people choose to fight each other? Yes, the Egyptian people will opt to fight against one another throughout the country. But Egypt will be watched and protected by Yahweh or the LORD. The idea is to intensively, purposely weave together the Egyptians against each other repeatedly.

God is in control regardless of our actions. He can overcome our repeated bad decisions.

Predestined With Free Will: Pharaoh Meets the LORD

Romans 9:16-17 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”

The Apostle Paul is quoting Exodus 9:16.

Here is a text book example of a man’s will on display verses the will of God. Pharaoh is representing the nation Egypt. The Apostle Paul is pointing out man’s will or a nation’s will is no match for God’s will. Pharaoh clearly exerts his choices and will towards the Jewish slaves in Egypt. Little does Pharaoh know, he is being used by God.

Critics would say Pharaoh had no choice in the matter. They argue Pharaoh was made for failure. The critic says God is not fair and unjust towards Pharaoh.

Moses has one simple request.

Exodus 5:1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”

Exodus 5:2 But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”

But look at Pharaoh’s attitude when he first encounters Moses the representative of God. Pharaoh clearly understands Moses and Aaron. There is no confusion. Pharaoh does not acknowledge God. He questions His authority and existence. Pharaoh is not interested in playing along with this so-called LORD’s request. Pharaoh will have his way and do what he wants regardless of any request. Israel is going nowhere. Israel will stay under the authority of Egypt. The Hebrew people have work to do for Pharaoh.

God is formal with Pharaoh. He introduces Himself by His proper name. YHWH (scholars refer to this as the Tetragrammaton, Greek for four letters) is the proper name of the Hebrew God of the Bible. The correct spelling is YHWH. Note, there are no vowels in this term. Vowels from the name Adonai were substituted and the term Yahweh emerged. Jehovah is a word that has been translated to English from the Hebrew, Yahweh. The name for LORD is Jehovah. It means the existing one. This name is so sacred, Jews refuse to pronounce it. The name is first introduced in Exodus 3:14 when Moses and God are having a discussion. His name is a statement of existence.

Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

If one is looking for proof that God created or God exists, you are wasting your time. It is assumed. God is eternal and self-existent. God always has been and always will be.

Revelation: Philadelphia, His Name is Yahweh

Revelation 3:12b …And I will write on him the name of my God…

Jesus will write on the believer the name of His God. His name is Yahweh.

The topic of God’s name has been addressed previously to the church at Sardis. God takes the time to repeat the concept of His name to the church at Philadelphia. It bears repeating.

Not only does Jesus write the name of Yahweh on the believer, the believer is sealed with the Spirit of God. There are at least 12 verses in the Bible confirming the work of the Spirit in His people.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put His seal on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.

All three persons of the triune God are involved: Father, Son, and Spirit. To borrow a line from Stevie Wonder…

Signed, sealed, delivered, I’m yours.

This name is a promise for all eternity. We see this at the end of Revelation in New Jerusalem. These are the closing comments of the Bible.

Revelation 22:4 They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.

Revelation: Sardis, Seven Aspects of the Spirit

Revelation 3:1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this:

The Bible is clear. The grammar and syntax in reference to the “Spirit” are singular. There is one Spirit of God with seven aspects or characteristics.

Isaiah 11:2 defines the seven aspects of the Spirit. This is the character of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 11:2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,
The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

These are the aspects of the Spirit: 1) The Lord, 2) wisdom, 3) understanding, 4) counsel, 5) strength, 6) knowledge, and 7) fear of the Lord.

Wisdom…The Hebrew word is chokmah. It means: skill (in war); wisdom (in administration); shrewdness; prudence (in religious affairs); wisdom (ethical and religious). This about the application of knowledge.

Understanding…The Hebrew word is biynah. It means: understanding, discernment; act; faculty; object; personified.

Counsel…The Hebrew word is `etsah. It means: counsel, advice, purpose, consult.

Strength…The Hebrew word is ga buwrah. It means: might; valour, bravery; mighty deeds (of God).

Knowledge…The Hebrew word is da`ath. It means: perception, skill; discernment, understanding.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

In this verse, the Hebrew word for “fear” is yir’ah. It can be translated: fear, terror, fearing, awesome or terrifying thing (object causing fear); fear (of God); respect, reverence, piety, revered. -Strong’s Concordance.

The term yara’ (noted in Proverbs 1:7 and Isaiah 8:12) is the common word for fear in the Old Testament and has a basic three-fold range of meanings: 1) “dread; terror” (Deuteronomy 1:29, Jonah 1:10), 2) “to stand in awe” (I Kings 3:28), 3) “to revere; to respect” (Leviticus 19:3). With the Lord as the object, it captures the polar opposites of shrinking back in fear and drawing close in awe and adoration (NET Bible notes).

Millennial Kingdom: Yasha` Yeshua

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.

The term “victorious warrior” is most interesting in the original language. The Hebrew word for “victorious” is yasha`. It is a verb. The grammar says the warrior is the cause. It means to save, deliver from moral troubles; to give victory to.

The Hebrew word for “warrior” is gibbowr, a strong and mighty man. –Strong’s Concordance

The strong and mighty warrior will be a savior. He will and has delivered from moral trouble or sin. He will give military victory to Israel.

The noun form of yasha` is Yeshua. The Hebrew name for Jesus is Yeshua.

The term for LORD is Yahweh, The Existing One. This is the definitive name for God. This is the proper name of the Hebrew God of the Bible. Jehovah is a word that has been translated to English from the Hebrew, Yahweh. The correct spelling is YHWH (Hebrew font is not available). Scholars refer to this as the Tetragrammaton, Greek for four letters. This name is so sacred, Jews refuse to pronounce it. The name is first introduced in Exodus 3:14 when Moses and God are having a discussion. God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

The LORD, Yahweh is speaking in this verse in Zephaniah 3.

Yeshua Himself connects the dots in the Book of John. Jesus makes seven statements in the Book of John explaining “I am…”

I am the bread of life (John 6:35).

I am the light of the world (John 8:12).

I am the gate (John 10:9).

I am the good shepherd (John 10:11).

I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25).

I am the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6).

I am the vine (John 15:5).

Yeshua is Yahweh, The Existing One. He saves. He will have military conquest.

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM.”

Jesus Christ is the victorious warrior. He will dwell or tabernacle with the nation we know as Israel. The verse uses four different terms in Hebrew to describe the excitement and joy of Christ. He too will shout for joy with the introduction of His Kingdom. Yeshua will celebrate.

Trend Update: Mount of Olives, Passover 2016

Zechariah 14:4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.

On the Mount of Olives east of the Temple Mount on Monday, April 25, 2016, a Passover sacrifice ceremony was held. Over 400 people attended the event. Multiple public figures and officials stated hope for the day the Dome of the Rock and al Aksa Mosque would be removed from the Temple Mount. They believe the time is now to raze the area and purify the land.

You can bet your last shekel those attending this Passover ceremony know the verse in Zechariah (name means: Yahweh remembers).

The Mount of Olives is roughly 3,000 feet or a little over ½ mile from the Temple Mount. As the crowd looked across to the Temple Mount, they see the Eastern Gate or the Golden Gate. Currently the gate is considered the property of the Muslims. They have sealed it with brick and mortar. In front of the gate is a Muslim cemetery. Little do they know, they are the instruments of prophecy fulfillment.

Ezekiel 44:1-3 Then he brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, which faces east. And it was shut. And the LORD said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered by it. Therefore it shall remain shut. Only the prince may sit in it to eat bread before the LORD. He shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gate, and shall go out by the same way.”

The prophet Ezekiel was told by the LORD. The Hebrew word for LORD is Yahweh, The Existing One. This is the definitive name of God. And He says only the Prince may enter this gate. This is His gate. It is stated four times in Ezekiel 44:2, the gate is to remain closed to others. Yahweh is in charge of this gate.

Fast forward roughly 500-600 years from the prophets to the ascension of Jesus into Heaven. Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives. He is promised to return in the same manner.

Acts 1:11-12 …and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

Trend Update: Temple of Bel, March 2016

1 Kings 18:40 Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

The verse above is the result of the showdown between Yahweh and Baal on Mount Carmel. All of the drama of the Baal worshipers did not matter. 1 Kings 18:28 So they cried with a loud voice and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out on them. Elijah the prophet verses 450 prophets of Baal…no match.

The ancient god of Bel is back in the news. This is the same Bel of the Bible.

Bel, a serpent dragon, was the chief god of the Babylonians. This the same Bel Daniel refused to worship in Babylon.

Bel is also known as Baal. Baal means “lord” or “master”.

Israel came under judgment for sacrificing their sons to Baal in Jeremiah 19:5 and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, a thing which I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever enter My mind…

Another name for Bel is Beelzebub. This is the name given to Satan in Matthew 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man casts out demons only by Beelzebub the ruler of the demons.” Beelzebub is also known as the lord of the flies or the dung god.

The Temple of Bel was bulldozed by ISIS in Palmyra, Syria in 2015. Palmyra, the city of Palms, is 130 miles northeast of Damascus, Syria. The temple was founded in 32 AD. It was the center of religious life in Palmyra.

Copies of the 50 foot arch are to be rebuilt in Trafalgar Square in London and Times Square in New York City. It is a “gesture of defiance” to ISIS.

This is all set to take place in April 2016 during World Heritage Week.

Jesus, I Am…

Jesus’ “I am” statements during his arrest in John 18:5, 6, 8, shed light into multiple facets of who He is. First, it is His identity. The Romans, officers from the chief priest, and Pharisees were seeking Jesus, the Nazarene. Jesus answered them twice, “I am.”
Second, His omnipotence is on display. With those two words, the arresting crowd drew back and fell to the ground. This is a small example of what His speech is capable of. His speech also raised the dead (Lazarus) and He spoke the creation into existence (Genesis, Colossians 1:16).
Jesus’ sovereignty is demonstrated during the arrest. Scripture was fulfilled in that His apostles were protected and not one of them was lost. Jesus was in control to the point that He allowed Himself to be arrested. Jesus had the power to resist and avoid arrest. In this setting, He caused the pursuing crowd to fall to the ground by the words of His mouth. Jesus informs the crowd He could call on God the Father for twelve plus legions of angels for His protection (Matthew 26:53). Escaping arrest would not have been a problem. Jesus overcame Peter’s disobedience and subsequent knife attack to the right ear of Malchus. Peter’s violence was halted by Christ’s words (Luke 22:51); and the mob’s potential response was stopped with the healing of Malchus’ ear. Jesus states these circumstances are His cup to drink (John 18:11). There is little doubt He is in control of the events.
Lastly, the statement “I am” is a direct link to the deity of Christ. When Moses asked God His name, God responded “I am” (Exodus 3:14). Throughout the Old Testament God would describe His characteristics to the Jewish people, “I am …”
Jesus came along and filled in the blanks. His “I am” statements in the Gospel of John point to His deity. The response Jesus gives to the high priest when asked directly, “are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One,” (Mark 14:61). “I AM.”

Isaiah 10:33-34 God, the Lumberjack

Isaiah 10:33-34 Behold, the Lord, the GOD of hosts, will lop off the boughs with a terrible crash; those also who are tall in stature will be cut down and those who are lofty will be abased. He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe, and Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

Who is coming? The meaning of God’s names in this context are: Adonai (The Master), Yahweh (the Existing One). The grammar in the Hebrew indicates God is the cause. He is doing this repeatedly and intensively. The actions are extended and intentional. Descriptively, the actions are shocking and terrifying. This is a shock and awe campaign.

This is the same Lebanon that borders present day Israel to the north. Lebanon was known for their forests. It was a significant source of income. The trees are a sign of economic prosperity. Today on Lebanon’s flag is the very Cedar of Lebanon. These trees grow primarily in the mountains of the Mediterranean region. They grow up to 130 feet tall with a trunk of up to 8 feet in diameter. The wood of the cedar is disease resistant and slow to decay. Timber came from here to build the temple under Solomon. Cedar is the chosen wood of God’s temple. The temple built by Solomon was primarily made of cedar. 1 Kings 6 gives significant detail regarding the temple. Lebanon’s physical resource of lumber will be destroyed.

The verses are a reminder to the Assyrian. He is a tool of iron, an axe. The Assyrian is under the direction of God. Isaiah 10:15 Is the axe to boast itself over the one who chops with it? Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it? That would be like a club wielding those who lift it, or like a rod lifting him who is not wood. To the Assyrian, “This is how you wield an axe!”

A pattern of Scripture is noted in this verse along with other places in the Bible: trees, like proud men, are coming down. Psalm 29:5 confirms this fact. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; Yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

Isaiah 2:13 And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up,

Pride will be humbled. God will take care of that.
