Gabriel’s Historical Decree

Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.

Gabriel has provided Daniel an outline from his place in time at 539 BC through the end of the gentile reign, into the Millennial Kingdom and beyond. The promises stated by Gabriel have yet to be completely fulfilled over 2,500 years later.

Let’s take a look at the overview of what Gabriel says will come to pass.

Seventy weeks… The first part of the time equation is straight forward. Shibim is the Hebrew word for the number 70. The second word is a bit more complicated as we see it from a western perspective. The Hebrew word of “weeks” is shabua. Per Strong’s Concordance, shabua is defined as a period of seven (days, years), heptad, week. For the purpose of this outline, 70 sets of seven years is 490 years. 70 X 7 = 490. There will be more on this concept of 70 7’s later.

your people… In this instance and the next, Gabriel references Daniel’s people and holy city. Gabriel is not a person, he is an angel. Daniel’s people are Israeli’s.

your holy city… Daniel’s holy city is Jerusalem. Gabriel’s home is in Heaven.

finish the transgression… This is the Hebrew phrase kela’ pesha`. The grammar of the verse indicates there will be intensive action that will finish rebellion. In other words, the party is definitively over. The rebellion will be undoubtedly crushed. Game over.

put an end to sin… Sin will cease. God as an external force will flex His will and stop sin.

atone for iniquity… Atone or kaphar in the Hebrew, kaphar means appease, to cover over, pacify, make propitiation (Strong’s Concordance). Atone for what? Sin or avon. This is the punishment or consequence of the guilt of sin.

atone for iniquity” is a prophecy of the cross work of Jesus Christ. 1 John 2:1-2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

bring in everlasting righteousness… everlasting or olam in the Hebrew. Olam is the word for eternal, long duration, antiquity, futurity, forever… What is forever? Righteousness or tsedeq. The term can also be translated as justice. The grammar states eternal, perfect justice will be caused to occur. Humanity has failed to be fair or blind in its administration of justice. The days of corruption will be brought to an end permanently by God.

seal both vision and prophet… The need for messengers, communication, dreams, visions and prophecy will be no more. God’s word will have been fulfilled and completed.

anoint a most holy place… This phrase could be translated one of many ways per commentators. The words “place” and “one” are implied after “holy“. The verse could literally read “anoint most holy” or “anoint holy”.

NET Bible offers up three possibilities.

  1. “the most holy place”
  2. “a most holy one”
  3. “the most holy one”

In the final analysis, a verse towards the end of Revelation may provide some clarity.

Revelation 21:22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.

Revelation: Sardis, One Spirit

Revelation 3:1 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this:

Who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars? Well, that would be Jesus. We know this from the letter to the church at Ephesus from Revelation 2:1. Jesus is giving us a reminder and a review plus some additional information. The review is regarding the seven stars.

Revelation 2:1a “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand…

The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand…What are stars? The answer is given in Revelation 1:20b …the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches… Stars are angels of the churches.

The new information is regarding the seven Spirits of God.

In the New Testament, the Greek word for “Spirit” is πνεῦμα/pneuma. Per Strong’s Concordance, pneuma is defined in this context as: the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son; sometimes referred to in a way which emphasizes his personality and character as the Holy Spirit; sometimes referred to in a way which emphasizes his work and power as the Spirit of Truth; never referred to as a depersonalized force.

This is not Star Wars. The Spirit is not the Force…The Spirit is a person of the Trinity.

Four times in the book of Revelation, the seven Spirits of God are referenced. See Revelation 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, and 5:6.

Scripture informs the seven Spirits of God are before the throne in Revelation 1:4 and 4:5.

Revelation 4:5b defines the issue of the seven Spirits of God. Lamps equal seven Spirits.

Revelation 4:5b And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God;

Revelation 5:6 reveals more information regarding the seven Spirits of God.

Revelation 5:6 And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth.

The number “seven (7)” in the Bible indicates completeness, fullness, and perfection. This is not in reference to seven individual Spirits. The Bible is clear. The grammar and syntax in the verse below in reference to the “Spirit” are singular. There is one Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

Other verses indicate the singular nature of the Spirit. Another example is noted below.

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

There is one Holy Spirit of God.

Leviticus 25:8-13 “You shall count seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, so that the time of the seven weeks of years shall give you forty-nine years. Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land.  And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan. That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of itself nor gather the grapes from the undressed vines. For it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. You may eat the produce of the field.  In this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his property.”

Moses is the author of Leviticus. God relayed the information to Moses. This took place in the desert at the tent of meeting or the tabernacle. God’s chosen people are out of Egypt. They had not entered the Promised Land of Israel. It is mentioned over 50 times in the book of Leviticus. God communicated to Moses.

Leviticus 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying…

The Hebrew word for “jubilee” is yovel. Per Strong’s Concordance: It means ram’s horn, trumpet, or cornet. It is also translated jubilee.

Per Scripture, we do know a jubilee year is proclaimed after the seventh Sabbatical or Shemitah year. The sequence calls for back to back years of rest for the land. By definition, the 50th year is proclaimed after the 49th (see above verses). The question is knowing the sequence of Sabbatical or Shemitah years. Which Sabbatical/Shemitah year is the first in the sequence?

See the links below for definition of a Sabbatical or Shemitah year.

The jubilee year is to be proclaimed on the Day of Atonement, one of God’s fall appointments. Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land.

Determining the next year of jubilee is highly controversial. Some believe a year of jubilee was proclaimed on Yom Kippur/Day of Atonement in the fall of 2015. Others believe it is not possible to determine the next jubilee. Some believe the year cannot be determined until nation Israel is represented by all tribes.

The nation of Israel and religious leaders did not proclaim a year of jubilee in 2015.

Nation Israel has not recognized a jubilee year in 2,000 years plus (God’s Final Jubilee, Dan Goodwin). At this point, only God knows.

A famous American Landmark, the Liberty Bell, was inspired by the Hebrew concept of jubilee. The inscription on the Liberty Bell is Leviticus 25:10b…proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants…

Habakkuk 1:5 Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. -LORD God
